Good morning, Broadway!

Last night, Second Stage Theater, the home of living American playwrights, hosted a lively gala at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers. The event started off hot with a fire-breathing act by Sage Sovereign, “The Priestess of Pyromancy,” set to the song “Girl on Fire.” (Luckily, she was not.) Honorees Debra Martin Chase and Lynn Nottage flipped the traditional gala script by speaking at the start of the evening rather than the end, setting a fun and personal tone for the night ahead. The gala also brought music star power, with special performances by Brandy, Lady A’s Hillary Scott, Jordin Sparks, Ayana George, and Broadway Inspirational Voices -- all backed by The Broadway Sinfonietta. And a special shout-out to the extremely compelling Radha Blank (writer and director of “The Forty-Year-Old Version”) who gave the funniest and most endearing remarks of the night. The gala’s menu, selected by the honorees, featured Savory Napoleon, Roast Amish Chicken, and Chocolate Caramel Pave. Congrats to everyone at Second Stage Theater on a memorable evening that raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to continue the mission of introducing Broadway and the world to bold and diverse voices of American creativity.
Welcome back, Broadway! As you head back to rehearsals, theaters, and offices, send in your stories, posts, and photos to morningmessage@broadwaybriefing.com for a chance to be featured in an upcoming Briefing!
